The Mortal Instruments - City of Bones

A shimmering book-cover. My eyes were drawn to it. I picked it up and started reading. Shadowhunters, a hidden world, and starcrossed lovers. How could this not be good? Without hesitation I went to the cashier, and now four years later the images that I had in my mind were transferred to the big screen.

Clary Fray is just a normal teenage girl, until the day she witness a murder. Problem is, she is the only one who can see it. She later finds out that the victim is a demon and the murderers are people called Shadowhunters, half-angel, half-human, and she’s one of them. In the midst of all of this, her mum gets kidnapped. In this new world of demons and Shadowhunters, how will Clary make it?

There is one word that describes this movie; fast. The story’s pace is definitely over the speed-limit. Characters are thrown in, new storylines are viewed in the rear window and you are always on edge and trying to follow the story’s pace. When the big moments in the film was happening, when you were supposed to feel like; “O M G,” the feeling was instead “meh”. Which is too bad! All the characters have great potential and depth, we just doesn’t get too see it.

What surprised me was the soundtrack. It was really good, especially the ones in the fighting scenes. It turned the level up a step, and made the hectic pace of the movie seem fine, for a moment or two, until you asked yourself: What just happened? The silent brothers were introduced, and just as fast they were gone. The vampires were there, the next second they were gone. And having things like that happening for over two hours wear you down.

As a fan of the book-series, I am pleased with the choice of the actors, and I think they all made a fantastic job. But it failed in other aspects. They tried to make the characters act as the ones in the book too hard. It didn’t follow a red line. In some areas it was good, others, not so. Overall, the movie was chaotic, hectic and you just didn’t care. There were some cool scenes, and some cheesy ones that me, myself enjoyed. But so much was rushed and didn’t make any sense. The joy of watching it disappeared because the thoughts streaming through the head trying to make sense of everything. No, this could have been better. I am not particularly looking forward to the second one. I am looking forward to re-reading the books.
